Campus Image and Environmental Standards

The following includes detailed instructions and guidelines for items related to Utah Valley University’s visual campus standards. It is important to follow brand and content guidelines and campus policies and procedures. Otherwise, materials will be promptly confiscated or removed.

Signage (Permanent)

The University Signage Standards are designed to create consistency and to respect campus character, history, and aesthetics. Following the standards unifies the look of the campus and streamlines processes. Signage policy must be followed to ensure accuracy. University Marketing and Communications governs the university’s image and brand application (UVU Policy 428).

Wayfinding Signage

UVU Wayfinding Signage

Wayfinding signage is designed primarily for the first-time visitor. Wayfinding should provide clear and concise directions, so visitors and students feel comfortable and secure. It is important that the wayfinding system achieve the following goals: welcome anyone who is not familiar with our campus a clearly defined environment, and provide directions to the top high-traffic destinations such as visitor parking from all approaches. Supporting wayfinding for certain heavily trafficked delivery, faculty and staff destinations is also beneficial.

Updating Wayfinding Signage

If your area needs new wayfinding or if you locate wayfinding signage that needs updating, please report it to Janeal Jacobs at

Purchasing (*Restricted)

This signage must be purchased by the assigned campus purchasing buyer who manages vendor contracts, legal standards, and approved specifications. For more information, contact Janeal Jacobs, Buyer II – Procurement and Contract Services.

Destination Logo Signage

Definition

Destination logo signage in reception/welcome areas is a professional solution that lets visitors know they have reached the right place and will be welcomed and provided with essential information. This signage must use the official secondary unit logo assigned to your college, department, or area.

Brand Identity Standards

Areas may only use officially approved secondary unit logos provided by University Marketing and Communications. Additional graphic elements that may have been provided for use are not permitted as permanent environmental branding..

Materials and Specs

The standard is a brushed aluminum-faced logo. Logo size and placement are individually customized to aesthetically fit spaces and maintain uniformity across campus. However, the UVU monogram portion is generally between 8” and 11” tall. A University Marketing and Communications representative will be assigned to measure your space, create a digital mockup, and order through an approved vendor who will manufacture and install the materials. Secondary unit logo installs are priced based on the area name’s size and number of characters. These services are paid for by the requesting department.

Purchasing (*Restricted)

Secondary unit logo installations are in a restricted purchasing category and must be ordered through University Marketing and Communications using the Project Request Form.

Digital Signage

The UVU Digital Signage Network (DSN) is restricted to university-related content. The DSN serves the informational, promotional, branding, entertainment, and emergency broadcast needs of the university and individual schools and departments. University Marketing and Communications reviews submissions to ensure content and brand accuracy. Content may run for a maximum of two weeks.

Submissions

For instructions on how to submit your digital signage request, go to https://www.uvu.edu/digitalsignage

Bulletin Boards

Campus bulletin boards are vehicles for temporary signage opportunities. General-use boards in high-traffic areas are managed by Campus Connections. All posters must be approved and placed by Campus Connections (see poster process above). Any content placed without prior approval will be removed.

Department bulletin boards are managed by each department.

Donor Signage

UVU understands the importance of recognizing the generosity and support of donors. It is important to acknowledge the extraordinary impact donors make while maintaining brand consistency in naming opportunities and signage.

Donor-identifying plaques and naming signage standards have been set by University Marketing and Communications, Institutional Advancement Marketing and Strategic Communications, and Donor Relations. Donor tiers, final materials, messaging, and placement details must be approved by the above governing bodies. Policy guidelines and rules can be found here: UVU Donor Signage Brand Guide

Ceiling Graphics

Ceiling graphics are only permitted for athletic spaces, and approvals are managed by University Marketing and Communications.

Pillar Wraps

Pillar wraps, also known as column wraps and pole wraps, are large-format graphics printed on vinyl and adhered to concrete pillars. They are restricted to general branding and athletics (non-campaign) only, and all installations are managed by University Marketing and Communications. No other departments are permitted to apply graphics or signs to concrete or metal pillars.

Interior Hanging Banners

No other departments are permitted to apply or install graphics or signs, such as hanging banners, without prior permission. Materials that do not follow proper approval processes will be promptly removed.

Mounted Photography Standard

University Marketing and Communications and Campus Infrastructure have approved the following as standard applications for photography and artwork that adorn offices and general spaces. Photographs, or digital reproductions of artwork, are mounted to a 1/4” clear or frosted acrylic panel with silver 1” stand-offs. University Marketing and Communications has approved vendors to manufacture and install these materials.

Branding Supergraphics

Branding supergraphics are large-scale, branded design treatments that can be requested to add colors, logos, and brand elements to a space. All content must be created and managed by University Marketing and Communications. All locations and artwork must be pre-approved by University Marketing and Communications. In some situations, they may also require approval and assistance from Facilities through a Campus Infrastructure request. For more information or assistance, fill out a Project Request Form, and a University Marketing and Communications representative will assist you with design, approval, cost, and other requirements.

Floor Decals

Floor decals, also known as floor graphics or floor stickers, are specialized print media materials designed to be applied to floors. They can be walked on and present visual messages while resisting damage. Floor decals are considered temporary signage and can remain in predetermined campus locations for up to one month. Design, production, application, and removal are managed by the requester, following the approval and guidelines below.

Brand Identity Standards

All floor decals must be in UVU’s brand colors (greens, black, or white) and must include an official logo in the design (e.g., UVU monogram, UVU mascot, or area secondary unit logo). Final artwork must be approved by University Marketing and Communications before being sent to production.

Materials and Specs

Many vinyl materials can damage carpet or concrete or leave behind adhesive when removed. Texwalk® is a textured, anti-slip material with a reinforced fabric backing that doesn’t leave residue on floors or stain surfaces. Decals are printed with resilient, solvent-based inks that are water-resistant and cleanable. The employee or department will be financially liable for fixing damages resulting from using unapproved materials.

Locations

Limited locations for floor decals have been established (a map document is being worked on). Locations approved for decal usage are on a first-come, first-served basis. Only one client’s content will be used in a space at any given time.

Approvals

For size requirements, design approvals, location map, and recommended vendors, please contact University Marketing and Communications at .

Campaign Supergraphics

Campaign supergraphics have been strategically installed on exterior windows and interior walls around campus to create larger-than-life brand experiences for campus visitors. All supergraphics locations have been pre-approved through Campus Infrastructure for the sole use and ownership of University Marketing and Communications. UVU departments are not permitted to use individual campaign supergraphics.

Windows and Window Treatments

Windows and window treatments affect visitor experiences and create consistency across campus. Facilities and University Marketing and Communications govern window treatments. Standards vary per space with a variety of methods, such as blinds, roller shades, window frosting, and window wraps. These guidelines must be followed to ensure accuracy.

Find a complete guide on window definitions and approved treatments for each area, find design standards here. This includes all rules governing the use of blinds, roller shades, and frosting.

University Grounds

University grounds are physical outdoor campus environments, including spaces near buildings, open spaces, parking lots, and defined campus boundaries. Special care is taken to create treatments and landscape compositions that are appealing and enhance the UVU brand on campus.

UVU-branded items such as benches, trash receptacles, light pole banners, monuments, or plaques added to campus grounds require additional approvals by University Marketing and Communications and Campus Infrastructure.

For more details about grounds and landscaping, visit uvu.edu/facilities/grounds/.

Campus Artwork, Murals ,and Memorial Installations

Campus artwork, murals, and memorial installations are objects permanently or temporarily placed or displayed in the university’s indoor or outdoor public spaces. These items may be commissioned by the university, purchased by a university department or office, donated or bequeathed by a donor or friend of the university, donated as a class gift with fundraising activity, obtained through Utah’s Percent-for-Art Act, or acquired in another way.

Public Art Act

In 1985, the Utah Legislature passed the Utah Percent-for-Art Act (Utah Code Title 9, Chapter 6, Sections 401-409), which designates that 1% of construction costs of new and/or renovated state public buildings is added to the project for the purpose of commissioning, maintaining, and conserving site-specific art at, on, or in the facility. The collection includes various media, from textiles and glass to stone and metal monumental works.

UVU abides by this policy, and many of our art installations are included in the Percent-for-Art Act. No UVU person or group can willfully remove “public art.” More details about this act and its policy can be reviewed here: Utah’s Percent-for-Art Act

Murals

This category includes large installations that are not campaign or branding supergraphics or part of the Public Art Act. Murals may be created to share visuals or messages that enhance the on-campus experience for students and visitors. Murals must follow strict policy guidelines, including the Free Speech Policy and UVU’s Nondiscrimination Statement. The mural’s location and art must be approved by the Campus Image Committee, University Marketing and Communications, and Campus Infrastructure. Materials used and the longevity of those materials must be addressed. For assistance with policy adherence and approval processes, reach out to University Marketing and Communications.

Memorials

This category includes mounted or free-standing art, memorials, statues, plaques, or flags donated to or suggested by a university entity. This category is managed by multiple groups. If an item is donated to the university, review the donor signage guide above. Approvals are managed by Campus Infrastructure or another executive-level committee. Any unapproved installation will be promptly removed.
