Today, June 11, 2025, UVU's President’s Council approved the following policy actions:

Who does this apply to? All of the university community

What changes were made in Stage 2? The drafting committee made a change in section 5.1.3 to clarify the University’s authority to use its discretion to decide which accommodations it will grant when there are multiple ways to address an accommodation request.

Now that this policy is in Stage 3, what does this mean for me? This policy will now to go the Board of Trustees and is closed for commentary.

 

Policy 172 Advertising

What changes were made in Stage 2? Key revisions made at the end of Stage 2 included the following:

  • modified section 4.4 to clarify that University Marketing and Communications (UMC) has authority to manage violations in advertising and branding
  • added that UMC will select and invite appropriate individuals to serve on advertising review committees
  • clarified OGC’s role in assisting with the establishment of advertising review processes
  • changed “endorsements” to “acknowledgments” in section 4.10.4 and clarified that university entities must disclose compensation or benefits to those who provided acknowledgements or testimonials

Now that this policy is in Stage 3, what does this mean for me? These policies will now to go the Board of Trustees and are closed for commentary.

Policy 234 Qualified Sponsorships

Who does this apply to?  Those involved in making arrangements with third parties for qaulified sponsorships. 

What changes were made in Stage 2? At the end of Stage 2, the drafting committee made clarifying revisions. They clarified that

  • naming agreements are not covered in this policy, but in Policy 232, which in development
  • not all qualified sponsorships are charitable contributions
  • the definition of qualified sponsorship involves persons engaged in a trade or business
  • in some situations, the Director of Development must obtain written approval from the Director of Trademarks and Licensing in University Marketing

Now that this policy is in Stage 3, what does this mean for me? This policy will now to go Board of Trustees and is closed for commentary.

 

Policy 306 Recruitment, Selection, and Hiring of Faculty Positions

What changes were made in Stage 2? At the end of Stage 2, the following revisions were made: 

  • added Section 5.12 “Failing a Search";
  • added in 4.1.1 that this policy also applies to non-tenure track faculty until Policy 653 Non-Tenure Track Faculty has been approved;
  • added in section 4.2.5 that deans may require the use of checklists and form for searches in their school or college;
  • added in 5.1.1 that the dean is responsible for determining where the faculty line is most needed;
  • rewrote section 5.1.2 to state that “A lecturer position may be converted to a tenure-track position with the approval of the dean and Academic Affairs. A new search for a tenure-track position may then be posted in accordance with this policy”;
  • changed the hiring agent to the dean throughout the policy;
  • added “in consultation with Academic Affairs” in section 5.6.8 when referring the dean making the final hiring decision;
  • removed “department” in section 5.6.9 when referring to the hiring proposal because it is the dean who is giving the hiring proposal to the Provost, who is the ultimate hiring agent;
  • changed “sponsoring department” to “dean” in section 5.7.3 when referring to spousal/legal partner hires;
  • removed “and the department chair of the sponsoring department” in section 5.7.3; and
  • added in 4.2.7 that “Deans are strongly encouraged to seek input from affected departments.”

Policy 616 Regular and Substantive Interaction

What changes were made in Stage 2? At the end of Stage 2, the drafting committee made revisions to definitions to align them more with the federal statute. Section 4.5 was revised to clarify that it is deans and chairs who are responsible for addressing concerns that arise concerning regular and substantive interaction between instructors and students.

Now that this policy is in Stage 3, what does this mean for me? This policy will now to go Board of Trustees and is closed for commentary.

 

Policy 638 Post-Tenure Review

What changes were made in Stage 2? At the end of Stage 2, the drafting committee made the following revisions:

  • changed the definition of intellectual property to the same definition used in Policy 136 Intellectual Property;
  • changed the description of SRI from saying it is a qualitative rating to “A standard, university-wide student rating that is used for formative and summative purposes;
  • removed the word “holistic” and replaced it with “comprehensive” review as stated in the statute;
  • removed “and in an individual’s personal life” when talking about academic freedom because academic freedom doesn’t apply to an individual’s personal life;
  • removed a section that stated that minimum standards will summarized into a checklist so it would not conflict with another section that said that Academic Affairs and Faculty Senate will create and maintain a rubric for post-tenure review;
  • removed redundant verbiage in 4.2.1; and
  • added the requirement of a CV in the post-tenure review submission.

Policy 655 Graduate Faculty

What changes were made in Stage 2? At the end of Stage 2, the drafting committee made the following revisions:

  • Three categories of graduate faculty will be replaced with two categories: academic graduate faculty and professional graduate faculty.
  • Graduate Council representatives from each college/school must be tenured or tenure-track academic graduate faculty. The college/school dean representatives shall conduct the nomination and election process for Graduate Council faculty representatives.
  • Minimum uniform graduate faculty qualifications for the entire university will be established while allowing each graduate program to adopt additional qualifications, if desired.
  • Graduate program directors will approve graduate faculty applications to be considered by the Graduate Council for approval for 5-year appointments as graduate faculty.

Policy 658 Establishment and Administration of Graduate Programs

What changes were made in Stage 2? At the end of Stage 2, the drafting committee made the following revisions:

  • Graduate faculty category terminology will change to match changes in Policy 655-Graduate Faculty.
  • A definition of college/school graduate director was added, and the college/school graduate director reporting lines were refined.
  • A graduate program service role approval process was stated for full-time non-tenure track graduate faculty.
  • Graduate program admission committee selection language was changed.
