Who does this apply to? Faculty, staff, and students

What does this policy revision address? This policy will be opened for revision due to current internal and external reviews being conducted about scheduling and hosting events. Revisions will

  • revise and clarify definitions
  • revise the MEAC section and clarify the security assessment process
  • refine procedures for campus scheduling related to various event types
  • address the scheduling for all extension campuses and buildings managed by specific departments such as UCCU and Noorda
  • implement other changes as identified in campus and external reviews

Now that this policy is in Stage 1, what does this mean for me? If you have concerns about or ideas for this policy revision, please contact the policy steward.

Entrance to Stage 2

Policy 361 Employee Leave

Policy Steward Marni Fisher
Policy Actions Revision
President's Council Action Entrance to Stage 2
Pipeline Draft Stage 2 Draft

Who does this apply to? Employees

What will the revisions to this policy address? This revision addresses two issues:

1) Parental leave is 2 weeks and may be taken by new mothers or fathers. Medical maternity is six weeks and can only be taken by the birthing parent. Fathers receive less leave than mothers.

2) The Department of Labor has issued a new rule for the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), increasing the minimum salary threshold for exempt employees for January 1, 2025, January 1, 2027, and every three years after. Due to the new minimum threshold, we will need to adjust the exempt classification to nonexempt classification vacation accruals to keep from negatively impacting employees who will change from exempt to non-exempt status.

Now that this policy is in Stage 2, what does this mean for me? You may now submit comments to your elected senator or to the policy steward. Stage 2 ends April 16, 2026.

Pipeline Draft Stage 2 Draft

Who does this apply to? Faculty and students

What will the revisions to this policy address? Due to changes and increased expectations for Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) at the institutional, state, and accreditor levels, discrepancies in the current policy have surfaced that need to be addressed, and suggestions have been made for further adjustments, clarity, and oversight.

Now that this policy is in Stage 2, what does this mean for me? You may now submit comments to your elected senator or to the policy steward. Stage 2 ends April 16, 2026.

NOTE:This policy will move from Student Affairs to Academic Affairs and be assigned a new policy number, changing from 525 to 611.

Policy 653 Non-Tenure Track Faculty Employment Matters

Approval Process Regular
Policy Sponsor Wayne Vaught
Policy Steward Kat Brown
Policy Actions New
President's Council Action Entrance to Stage 2
Pipeline Draft Stage 2 Draft

Who does this apply to? Non-tenure track faculty

What issues does this new policy address? The employment responsibilities, duties, and function of non-tenure track professors differ in significant ways at UVU. Currently, these differences are not addressed extensively in policy. This lack of policy guidance has created issues related to non-reappointment, as well as other employment issues. The new policy will do the following:
1) Establish in policy non-tenure track faculty rights and responsibilities at UVU.
2) Provide guidance in policy on key employment matters such as hiring/initial appointment,
reappointment, termination, career track, advancement, and performance review.

Now that this policy is in Stage 2, what does this mean for me? You may now submit comments to your elected senator or to the policy steward. Stage 2 ends April 16, 2026.

Entrance to Stage 3

Policy 637 Faculty Tenure

Policy Steward Kat Brown

President's Council Action Entrance to Stage 3
Pipeline Draft Stage 3 Draft

Who does this apply to? Faculty

What issues does this revised policy address? Based on comments received in Stage 2 and further review by the policy owners, the following additional revisions were made:

  • Clarification and Consistency. Instances of “RTP criteria” were changed to “tenure criteria” to make the policy clearer, and “department” to “departments” were changed to include scenarios where more than one department is involved.
  • Several definitions were rewritten or removed to ensure definitions were kept the same across policies whenever possible.
  • Removal or Revision of Problematic or Unnecessary Policy Elements. Termination for cause definition was removed. We eliminated the requirements tied to a formal, signed tenure plan and instead reframed the plan as a developmental tool. With that, clarified that annual reviews may include discussions of the tenure plan but that candidates are evaluated against approved tenure criteria, not their plans. We also removed overly rigid or impractical expectations such as chair responsibility for verifying portfolio completeness.
  • Alignment with Policy 632. Multiple sections were revised to match the structure and language of Policy 632 Rank Advancement, especially regarding committee definitions, review cycles, and dean authority.
  • Probationary Period Adjustments. Comments requested that extensions and reductions be more normalized. The language was changed from “rarely granted” to “granted when reasonable circumstances justify.”
  • Governance and Approval Authority. Faculty Senate raised concerns about administrative overreach in approving tenure criteria. Language was adjusted for clarity, but administrative oversight remains intact.
  • Timelines and Deadlines. Specific timelines were not added; instead, the language was updated to read, “Resolution must take place in a timely manner.”
  • Student Ratings of Instruction. Comments requested that the policy explicitly state that student evaluations are one of multiple measures of teaching effectiveness and therefore do not carry more weight than any other measure. Language was updated to address these concerns.
  • Terminal Appointment and Decision-Making. We revised language to provide clearer guidance about when a terminal year is offered, and it requires consultation with People and Culture and General Counsel to reduce bias.

Now that this policy is in Stage 3, what does this mean for me? This policy is scheduled to be approved by Board of Trustees on February 26.
