Program Description
Drama for Wellness is a community outreach initiative of the TYE Center that brings interactive theatre experiences to children and families in medical settings. Trained university students use creative drama and devised theatre to lead engaging sessions and perform original short plays in hospitals and family housing spaces.
Each visit is flexible and responsive, meeting children where they are—whether through active participation, quiet observation, or simple imaginative play. Through storytelling, games, and performance, Drama for Wellness fosters connection, creativity, and self-expression when opportunities for play may be limited.
What We Do
Interactive Drama Sessions
Participants are invited to join in theatre games, storytelling, and imaginative play
activities adapted for a wide range of ages and abilities.
Original Performances
Our troupe develops and performs short, engaging plays created specifically for nontraditional
spaces. These performances are interactive, flexible, and designed to meet audiences
of varying sizes and energy levels.
Adaptable Programming
Every visit is shaped by the needs of the moment. Whether working with a large group
or a single child, our performers prioritize responsiveness, accessibility, and care.
Why It Matters
For children and families navigating medical challenges, opportunities for play and self-expression can be limited. Drama for Wellness helps restore a sense of normalcy by creating space for creativity, choice, and connection.
Through theatre, participants can:
Even brief interactions can have a meaningful impact—offering laughter, distraction, and a reminder that play is still possible.
Where We Serve
Drama for Wellness partners with organizations that support children and families experiencing medical displacement. Programming takes place in:
Student Involvement
Drama for Wellness is powered by students from Utah Valley University’s theatre department. Participants collaborate to devise original work, adapt creative drama practices for nontraditional audiences, and engage in meaningful community-based learning.
Through this work, students develop skills in performance, collaboration, and responsive teaching while gaining experience using theatre as a tool for service and connection.
