Amanda Kimball, Exploring Major & Career Options

Department: First Year Advising Center

Amanda Kimball is an Academic Counselor for the First‐Year Advising Center at Utah Valley Universi‐ty. She specializes in working with students actively exploring major options. She has seen the positive generational effects of education first‐hand and has a pas‐sion for paying‐it‐forward so others can have opportunities. When not at work, Amanda loves to cook and bake and has a goal to try one new recipe per week. She looks forward to any moment spent in nature, loves being with family, and can turn heads at karaoke when singing a Whitney Houston song.

Melissa Eiche, The Six Potions of Sensitivity

Department: Pre‐Professional Advising Center

My name is Melissa Eiche (pronounced eye‐key). I am married to an incredible man named Karl, and we have three kiddos (Max– 13, AJ– 11, and Sarah– 8) and we adopted my first pet (cat) ever, Chloe, in December. I was first hired at UVU in 1998, but have worked fulltime since 2004 (with a handful of years in between being part‐time again after I had my first child). I work in the “Pre‐Professional Advise‐ment Center” or the office formerly known as the ACC, UCAC, etc. I advise students for per‐nursing, pre‐rad tech, and pre‐respiratory therapy. I absolutely thrive when helping students achieve their goals. I have always been a “crier” in the workplace, so naturally I am here to chat with you today about “The Six Potions of Sensitiv‐ity.” I will try really hard to not cry DURING the presentation, though no such thing can be promised!

Kristi is from Heber City and is a CE advisor at the UVU Wasatch Campus. Her favorite part of her job is working with students to help them reach their goals and building relationships with them while in high school. Jose Gallaga, First Generation 2.0

Department: First‐Year Advising Center

He attended East Los Angeles College and transferred to UC Berkeley where he ob‐tained a B.A. in Sociology with a Minor in Ethnic studies. Most recently, he graduated from the University of Southern California with an M.Ed. in Student Affairs. This is also where he became a huge advocate for first‐generation and un‐derrepresented student populations. As a previous first‐generation student, he is aware of the many challenges that come with not having early guidance in higher education, nor the value of educa‐tion taught at home. Now as he embarks into his professional field, he noticed that his fellow first‐generation colleagues experi‐enced similar challenges while navigating office culture. This gave him the idea to conduct research, which led to this presentation topic.
