Paramedic Student Clinical Rotation Overview for Preceptors

Paramedic students rotate through multiple hospital departments to develop clinical competence, strengthen decision-making, and improve continuity between prehospital and in-hospital care. The following provides a brief overview of the intended focus.

Cardiac Catheterization Lab (Cath Lab)

The Cath Lab rotation is designed to build awareness of cardiac intervention workflows, with emphasis on team coordination, sterile environment expectations, and effective patient handoff. This experience supports improved collaboration between EMS and cardiac teams, particularly in time-sensitive cardiac events.

Emergency Department (ED)

The primary goal in the emergency department is broad exposure to patient demographics and pathologies, with emphasis on conditions commonly encountered in the prehospital environment. Students benefit from hands-on opportunities such as IV access, medication administration (IM, IV bolus, and infusions), and trauma care. Any additional patient care experiences that enhance understanding of assessment, treatment, and interfacility transport considerations are highly valuable.

EKG / Cardiology

The goal of this rotation is to strengthen the student’s ability to acquire and interpret 12-lead EKGs. Hands-on practice combined with discussion alongside EKG technicians enhances rhythm recognition and clinical correlation, directly supporting field performance.

Paramedic students rotate through multiple hospital departments to develop clinical competence, strengthen decision-making, and improve continuity between prehospital and in-hospital care. The following provides a brief overview of the intended focus.

Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

The ICU provides exposure to patients with complex, multi-system conditions and comorbidities. Students should focus on understanding advanced treatment modalities, monitoring, and the clinical considerations involved in critical care transport and transitions of care.

These experiences are intended to provide exposure, context, and skill development rather than impose expectations. Any guidance, teaching, or opportunities you provide are greatly appreciated and contribute significantly to the student’s growth and readiness for patient care in the prehospital setting.

Labor & Delivery (L&D) / NICU

This rotation emphasizes exposure to live deliveries and neonatal care; populations infrequently encountered in the field. Students are encouraged to participate in newborn assessments under staff guidance. When delivery volume is low, opportunities in the NICU are beneficial to reinforce neonatal assessment and management principles.

Operating Room (OR)

The operating room provides a focused environment for airway management and ventilatory support. Students should seek opportunities to observe and, when appropriate, participate in endotracheal intubation, supraglottic airway placement, and bag-valve-mask ventilation, while gaining familiarity with controlled airway procedures and monitoring.
