Faculty Research Fellowships

Individual Research Fellowship (IRF) - $3,000
The Individual Research Fellowship allows faculty to advance scholarly pursuits through
focused research and related activities related to the academic study of ethics. Funds
may support research assistants, materials, conference participation, teaching load
reduction, etc. At least one IRF will be awarded for the 2020-21 school year. Additional
fellowships may be awarded depending on funding availability.
Interdisciplinary Group Fellowship (IGF) - $5,000
The Interdisciplinary Group Fellowship provides support for faculty research teams
organized to address a specific ethical issue from a variety of perspectives and methodologies.
These teams will work closely with students on undergraduate research activities including
mentored scholarship, workshops, etc. At least one IGF will be awarded for the 2020-21 school year. Additional fellowships
may be awarded depending on funding availability.
1. Individual Research Fellowship
Process
The process begins with a narrative proposal that (1) addresses a specific ethical
issue, (2) demonstrates the impact of the project in the field(s) of study, (3) outlines
the methodologies and research practices of the project, (4) includes a completion
timeline, and (5) identifies measures for project evaluation. Recipients are selected
by the CSE Faculty Advisory Committee and awardees will be notified by May 15, 2020.
The application packet includes:
- Application Cover Sheet with signatures (or email confirmation);
- curriculum vitae;
- narrative proposal that addresses the above items (1000 - 1200 words);
- two brief letters of recommendation for the project (preferably from department Chair, Dean, and/or senior scholars in the applicant’s discipline);
- budget sheet; and
- supplementary documentation (optional).
Expectations of Awardees include:
- pursuit of publication in appropriate academic journals or related volumes;
- presentation of research findings during the 2021 Ethics Awareness Week; and
- preparation of a final report outlining project activities and identifying the extent
to which the objectives were met.
Evaluation Criteria
Fellowship applications will be evaluated on the following criteria:
- The overall quality of the proposal including 1) demonstration of expertise, experience, and preparedness, 2) identification of the specific ethical issue(s) being addressed, 3) project organization, 4) student involvement, 5) clear objectives and timeline, and 6) evaluation measures;
- potential contribution to the field of study in terms of publication, teaching, and other manifestations of scholarship; and
- likelihood of completion.
Award & Conditions
The Fellow will receive an award of $3,000 to be used at the Fellow’s discretion for
hiring research assistants, purchasing books and other research materials, travel
directly related to the research, reduced teaching load (requires department Chair
and dean approval), and other appropriate expenses to support the project.
Eligibility
Applicants must be full-time faculty of Utah Valley University.
2. Interdisciplinary Group Fellowship
Process
The process begins with a joint narrative proposal that 1) addresses a specific ethical
issue, 2) demonstrates the impact of the project in the field of study, 3) leverages
the expertise of each faculty member on the research team, 3) outlines the methodologies
and research practices involved in the project, 4) demonstrates a substantial level
of student involvement, 5) includes a completion timeline, and 6) identifies measures
for project evaluation. Recipients are selected by the CSE Faculty Advisory Committee
and awardees will be notified by May 15, 2020.
The application packet includes:
- Application Cover Sheet with signatures (or email confirmation);
- curriculum vitae for each participating faculty;
- narrative proposal that addresses the above items (approximately 1200-1500 words);
- three brief letters of recommendation for the project, preferably from department Chair, Dean, and/or senior scholars in the applicant’s discipline;
- budget sheet; and
- supplementary documentation (optional).
Expectations of Awardees include:
- identification of lead faculty responsible for project organization (e.g. reporting, correspondence, etc.);
- pursuit of publication in appropriate academic journals or related volumes;
- presentation(s) of the project during the 2021 Ethics Awareness Week;
- preparation of a final report outlining project activity and identifying the extent to which objectives were met.
