Global Engagement Student Council Requirements

The Global Engagement Student Council is an opportunity for globally minded students to support the efforts of the Office for Global Engagement through increased faculty interactions and unique global activities. Students will also benefit from learning from experienced mentors as they progress along their path to becoming competent global citizens. This is a 2 semester commitment, with continuation in the program dependent on successfully completing all requirements during the first semester. 

 

Requirements to Apply

  • Any student who possesses a 3.0 GPA at the time of application.
  • Be enrolled in and complete 12 credit hours each semester (Full-time).
  • Letter of intent
  • Resume (with photo)
  • Unofficial Transcript (no older than 2 weeks from date of application)
  • Must be able to commit for two semesters, Fall and Spring
  • Spring semester participation depends on satisfactory completion of Fall semester requirements.

Program Participant Expectations

  • All meetings require in-person attendance
  • Any communication regarding absence or delay needs to be sent via GESC Teams Chat
  • Come on time! Dont be late!

Program Participant Required Meetings

  • Attend Student Retreat at UVU - (usually 2nd week in August)
  • Contribute a minimum of 30 volunteer hours per semester (Including in-office, tabling, and Global Engagement event support)
  • Attend Bi-monthly Meetings (first and third Wednesday of the month in LA 210b - time tbd) Missing more than 2 meetings automatically disqualifies student from subsequent semester.

Meeting dates:

    • Fall 2025
      • First and Third Tuesday of every month at 1pm 
    • Spring 2026
      • First and Third Tuesday of every month at 1pm 

Program Participant Required Events

  • Attend and participate in 4 department sponsored events per semester, including:
    • Global Spotlights (1-2 events monthly)
    • United Nations Days events (i.e., UN Day, International Peace Day, International Mother Language Day, International Women’s Day)
    • Other events organized by the Office for Global Engagement (Conferences, Dignatary Visits).
    • Failure to partipate in 4 events, during the semester, automatically disqualifies student from the subsequent semester.
  • Organize one Global Spotlight per semester with a faculty member
    • Program participants are required to identify a faculty member that will host a Global Spotlight. This is done once per semester. Global Spotlights raise awareness of a global issue  and must include and international component. 
    • Program participants will work with Office for Global Engagement staff for guidance and support on Global Spotlight collaborations.
    • Failure to complete this requirement automatically disqualifies student from the subsequent semester.
  • Lead one Global Discussion per academic year:
    • Select a country or region of the world you will focus on.
    • Lead a global discuussion on a specific topic during our GESC meeting time. This can be expanded to bring in a broader campus audience or as a collaboration with another UVU department or club.
    • Discussion must raise awareness of a global issue, with a defined international component.
    • Failure to complete this requirement automatically disqualifies student from the subsequent semester.

 

Program Participant Benefits

  • Learn leadership, communication, teamwork, organization, and public speaking skills.
  • Gain an increased ability to present yourself, the passions you wish to explore, and the kind of leader you want to be to universities and future employers.
  • Interact with global leaders and foreign dignitaries.
  • Receive a $1000 tuition scholarship for each semester (Fall and Spring*). Spring semester participation depends on satisfactory completion of Fall semester requirements.
