Tech grid with UVU Symposium on Teaching and Learning

Join us for the 2nd Annual Symposium on Teaching and Learning: Practice and Research. This event is hosted by the Utah Valley University Faculty Senate’s Advancement of Teaching Committee and the Office of Teaching and Learning. The purpose is to showcase and recognize teaching and supporting learning at UVU. The focus of this symposium is to share experiences and to engage in dialogues around teaching and learning. The symposium is also a space to ponder on how to improve the learning and the experiences of students in an ever- and fast-changing educational landscape and a world that neither they nor we know.

During this two-day conference, participants will have the opportunity to hear from instructors who won the Senate Faculty Excellence Award and the Flexible Teaching Award. Participants will also hear from instructors who engaged in research around their teaching and from those who are implementing innovative teaching practices. Each day of the conference will have sessions dedicated to each theme.

Theme 1: Award Winner (45 minutes of three 10-minute presentations)

In these sessions, faculty who won the Senate’s Faculty Excellence Awards, the Flexible Teaching Awards or have gained their HEA Fellowship showcase and discuss some of the teaching strategies they have used in their classes to meet the “Achieve, Engage, Include” values of UVU. Flexible Learning awardees will give us a sneak peek into what makes their online classes award worthy.

Theme 2: Teaching Trends (45 minutes of three 10-minute)

How we approach learning and teaching in higher education has changed dramatically in the last few years. Faculty who are at the cutting edge of teaching will share insights into the newest trends and what may be on the horizon.

Theme 3: Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (45 minutes of three 10-minute presentations with Q&A)

Faculty who engage in the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) will present and discuss how they have enhanced student success in their classrooms. These SoTLers will give us insight into what empirically supported techniques are most beneficial for UVU students.

Theme 4: Pedagogical Points to Ponder Poster Session (Video Abstract with PDF poster/handouts)

This asynchronous session allows faculty to showcase their classroom research, explore teaching practices, or discuss "pedagogical points to ponder" (an exploration of novel trends or teaching subjects that warrant further exploration, substantiated with citations from the literature but with no requirement for empirical evidence).
