Creating a course is a lot like rock climbing. If you don’t know the most effective climbing route, or if you are an inexperienced climber, you could spend a lot more time on the rock face than you’d like and not even reach your target destination. Fortunately, there are many experienced climbers who map out climbing routes and insert bolts at certain milestones for those following behind.
In sport lead climbing, climbers rely on fixed bolts for protection along a predefined route. They clip into these “milestone” bolts as they climb, relying on the strength of the bolts, climbing rope, and harness for safety and support. Climbing partners, called belayers, hold the ends of the climbing rope. A belayer maintains tension on a climbing rope to counterbalance the climber when they fall. Belayers can give direction as well, if a climber is struggling to find a hand or foot hold.
The route to a successful course design also has milestones. To help you meet those milestones, you will work with an instructional designer (your “belayer”) to support and guide you. Your instructional designer is familiar with the route and has tools to help you be successful.
When faculty and instructional designers work together, extraordinary learning experiences happen. Faculty bring subject knowledge and Instructional Designers bring learning expertise and training as well as technology experience to the table.
Listening, discussing and writing are important parts of our EVERY day. We are skilled at building relationships with faculty and are passionate about what we do.
We have ideas to add to yours. We think about the user experience, design, flow, look and feel of our courses as well as faculty course management load. We are always looking for better ways to design courses.
