I'm Just Getting Started With Benefits

Do I have to attend full-time to use a VA benefit?

No. You may use benefits while attending part-time if you would like. However, we recommend attending more than half-time to maximize the dollar value of your benefits. VA attendance is calculated on a daily basis, not a semester basis. Please be aware that other departments on campus, such as Financial Aid or Scholarships, may require more credit hours.

How do I obtain residency (in-state tuition) as a military-connected person?

Please visit the Residency website and scroll down to the Military Service Exceptions. If you qualify for an exception, you may apply for Utah resident status and have the normal one year waiting period waived. Apply for resident status here and upload any requested documentation so that UVU may verify your military and Utah connection.

By law, schools are allowed to have additional requirements that must be met (such as providing documentation) for a covered individual to be changed the resident rate for tuition and fees. In some cases, dependents of service members on orders outside of Utah may not qualify for resident status. Contact if you have questions.

Does UVU participate in the VA Yellow Ribbon Program?

No. The Yellow Ribbon Program is designed to help pay for high cost out-of-state, private, foreign, or graduate school tuition and fees that the Post 9/11 GI Bill® doesn't cover. As a public school with competitive tuition and fees, most UVU students would not benefit from Yellow Ribbon.

UVU also grants military service exceptions to its Residency policy so that the one year waiting period is waived for most military-connected students. This means that most military-connected students are charged in-state tuition and fees.

Can I use benefits through UVU to pay for my flight training?

Visit our Aviation page for more information about flight training at UVU.

If I am using Tuition Assistance, do I need to submit a Veteran Class Schedule Form?

No. Currently, we do not process the Tuition Assistance (Federal or State) requests in our center. You should submit your Tuition Assistance approval to the UVU Accounts Receivable office at . If you are in the Utah Army National Guard, you can find additional help and resources for Tuition Assistance at the UTARNG Education Services Office website.

My Enrollment Has Changed

If I add or drop a class, do I have to resubmit my Veteran Class Schedule Form?

No. The system will block new submissions after a form is already on file for the semester. Please submit any course changes, along with your UVID number, to  or call us at 801-863-8212

I changed my major or want to change my major. What do I need to do?

If you want to change your major, the first step is to contact the academic advisor for the new major and ask them to declare the new major on your Wolverine Track. Find your new advisor at Academic Advising.

If you are using benefits, the second step is to notify the Veteran Success Center at  or 801-863-8212 and provide your UVID and the new major. If you already submitted a Veteran Class Schedule Form, it may be cancelled and you may also need to submit a new form. Your classes must be required in the new major to be certified for benefits.

I need to withdraw from school and classes have already begun. What do I need to do? How will this impact my benefits?

We recommend contacting us at  or 801-863-8212 prior to withdrawing. If the withdraw occurs after the 100% refund deadline, you may incur a debt with UVU and/or the VA. Note that block courses have unique deadlines. Courses can be dropped at my.uvu.edu on the Registration & Academics page.

If the withdraw deadline has passed, you will need to submit a petition form to the Registrar’s Office. Late withdrawals will show as a W grade on your UVU transcript. If you are withdrawing from all of your courses, consider filling out a Leave of Absence as well.

Can I put my benefits “on hold” for a semester?

Yes. If you do not want to use benefits for a semester, simply do not submit a Veteran Class Schedule Form for that semester. Refer to your most recent Certificate of Eligibility so that you are aware of the delimiting/expiration date of your benefits, if applicable.

I am leaving on military orders. What do I need to do?

If you are leaving on orders such as deployment, mobilization, or a long period of training, but intend to return to UVU, please complete a Leave of Absence. Depending on your situation, you may also want to complete a Late Withdrawal or Refund petition. If you are leaving during a semester for which you are receiving benefits, please e-mail  or call 801-863-8212 so that we can discuss any potential impact on your benefits. You may also reference the Student Military Leave Procedure.

I Have a Financial Question

Can I use the Pell Grant with VA Benefits?

Yes. We recommend all students complete a FAFSA application and accept a Pell Grant if it is offered. The Pell Grant will be applied to your student financial account prior to any VA tuition payments you may be eligible for. If your benefit pays tuition to the school, you will be refunded any extra funding out of your Pell Grant at that time. Keep in mind that you may have to wait until well into the semester to receive a refund of your Pell Grant if the school is still waiting on the VA payment (it is not requested until after the drop/add deadline).

Can I use VA Benefits with a scholarship?

It depends on the specific scholarship. Some scholarships result in extra money being refunded to you, while others are redundant when used with VA benefits because they pay the same charges. Please contact the Veteran Success Center and ask for details about how your specific scholarship will be affected by your benefits.

I haven’t received any benefit payments. When will I be paid?

Payment timing is unique to each student and semester. Please ensure that you have submitted a Veteran Class Schedule Form for the semester in question. UVU processing may take 5 to 30 days, and VA processing typically takes another 5 to 30 days depending on the time of year and number of claims received.

  • Post 9/11 GI Bill® recipients: Tuition is not requested from the VA until after the add/drop deadline has passed. Tuition money typically arrives mid-semester, or later if you have second block classes. Book money may arrive no earlier than 7-14 days before the first day of class.
  • Montgomery GI Bill® (Chapters 1606 or 30) recipients: Ensure that you have verified attendance on the last day of each month by calling 877-823-2378 or using the WAVE system (Web Automated Verification of Enrollment).

If you still have questions, please contact the Veteran Success Center, or call the VA Regional Office at 888-442-4551. You can also submit a ticket at Ask VA (AVA).

I received a debt letter in the mail from the VA. Why?

You may have incurred a debt if one or more of the following are true:

  • A class was added or dropped after submitting your Veteran Class Schedule Form.
  • A class was dropped after the 100% refund deadline, or you petitioned for a late withdrawal (W grade).
  • Your professor reported non-attendance/unofficial withdraw (UW grade) due to missing assignments and/or exams.
  • You petitioned for a course to be removed from your GPA and for its tuition to be refunded.
  • You changed your mind about requesting benefits after they were already processed.
  • There was a tuition payment error between the VA and UVU. In this case, you may have received a copy of a debt that UVU owes on your behalf. If the letter addresses UVU or Certifying Official, please contact the Veteran Success Center.

We recommend contacting the VA Debt Management Center as soon as possible to arrange payment on any debts letters that address you as the student by name. There are more payment options available within the first 30 days of the date on the letter. The Debt Management Center can be reached at 800-827-0648 or on the VA website.
