Concurrent Enrollment and Economics Competition

Concurrent Enrollment and Economics Competition

"Each of the four schools showed incredible skills and understanding, demonstrating what they learned in their Economics 1010 class, but two of the four schools ended up taking the victories. Timpview took the win for Quiz Ball, but Skyridge came out on top with wins in both Writing and Case Studies."

Teams from four high schools gathered to Utah Valley University’s (UVU) Orem Campus on April 19, 2024, to compete in the Economics Concurrent Enrollment competition, an event testing students on what they learned in their Concurrent Enrollment classes this year.

The competition was a joint production by UVU’s Concurrent Enrollment office and the Department of Finance and Economics in UVU’s Woodbury School of Business. Students from Timpview, Skyridge, Westlake, and Provo High Schools competed across three categories: Writing, Case Studies, and Quiz Ball.

Each of the four schools showed incredible skills and understanding, demonstrating what they learned in their Economics 1010 class, but two of the four schools ended up taking the victories. Timpview took the win for Quiz Ball, but Skyridge came out on top with wins in both Writing and Case Studies.

This event also helped students learn what paths are available for them if they choose to continue studying at UVU. Some of these choices of majors include finance, personal planning, and three minors in real estate development, insurance, and applied economics.

Many people from the Woodbury School of Business and Concurrent Enrollment contributed time and planning to make this event possible, including Rachel Bi, the department chair; economics professor Maritza Sotomayor; and Briawna Simkins, Concurrent Enrollment’s outreach and events manager, helped this event to go forward and to allow space and time for these students to be recognized for their efforts.

This is the second time this event has taken place, with the first happening in April of 2022. Though the competition didn’t occur last year, the Economic Concurrent Enrollment teachers from Timpview, Skyridge, Westlake, and Provo high schools met with Sotomayor once a month for six months to meet and plan out the event.

Concurrent Enrollment was happy to partner with the Woodbury School of Business to provide a time for some of our Concurrent Enrollment Wolverines to show off the skills they learned this school year!
