What Is Academic Regalia?

Your cap and gown, also known as academic regalia, are required to attend all graduation ceremonies.

You’ll need to wear full university- approved and branded graduation regalia over business attire clothing.

Cap and Gown Ordering

Your regalia can be purchased at a discounted price at Grad Fest or through Jostens online. Additional items such as college/school stoles, zipper pulls, program distinction cords, academic honors medallions, and other graduation-related items can also be purchased. Please visit the Campus Store for cap and gown questions.

A

Cap/Mortarboard

The mortarboard (square part of the cap) should be worn flat on the head. Caps should not be worn on the back of the head. The front of the cap is indicated on the inside of the crown. Undergraduate caps are green, and master’s caps are black.

All cap tassels are green and white with a metal university seal charm attached at the clasp.

Before commencement, your tassel should be worn on the right side of your cap. During commencement, you will be instructed to move your tassel to the left side. For convocation, your tassel should be worn on the left side unless otherwise instructed by your school/college ceremony representative.

C

College/School Stole

Your college/school stole represents the college or school affiliated with your degree. The stole is platinum white with the mascot on the right and the college/school's name on the left, and should be evenly draped over the shoulders, facing forward down the front of the gown, and placed on top of the UVU sash.

Stole options include: School of Education, Woodbury School of Business, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, College of Health and Public Service, Smith College of Engineering and Technology, School of the Arts, and the College of Science.

Graduation Gown

Gowns are the main attire honoring your dedication at commencement.

Undergraduate gowns are a specific forest green shade with the UVU monogram logo embroidered on the left sleeve.

Master’s gowns are black with the UVU monogram logo embroidered on the left sleeve, and differ slightly from the undergraduate gown shown in green.

Note: Master’s graduates do not qualify for honors medallions because they require a minimum number of credits, which master’s students typically don’t accumulate in graduate programs.

Caring for Your Gown

For the best appearance, your gown should be removed from the package immediately after purchase and placed on a hanger to allow the folds to fall out. Steaming the gown or hanging the gown in a high-humidity area will accelerate the process.

Ironing is not recommended and may damage the regalia.
