A Map For Success

Congratulations! You’ve decided to set out on one of the most exciting journeys of your life: a college education. As with every journey, your college experience will be more successful if you have a plan, a MAP. The resources below offer insights and links to help you map out each year of your time in the UVU College of Humanities & Social Sciences (CHSS) because every year is different.

A word about maps:
  • Create a map of your journey at UVU, but keep it flexible. Life happens when you’re journeying, so be prepared to make adjustments.
  • Review and update your map often. Make it a habit at the end of each semester to review your map and modify it if you need to.
  • Celebrate each accomplishment! Your map should include “milestones” as well as your final destination. Celebrating when you get a good grade, finish your GE’s, or earn your associate’s degree will give you confidence to finish your bachelor’s degree.

First-year

Your first year of college is a time for EXPLORATION!

Successful explorers are curious! They persevere when they run into roadblocks! They’re brave! And they ask for help when they need it!
You don’t have to explore alone! CHSS has a lot of resources and advisors who can help, so reach out. Book an appointment, shoot us an email, check out the information below. Our goal is to help you explore your options and discover who you are and what you want from life. You increase your chances of success by completing these activities during your first year.

Sophomores

Avoid the dreaded “sophomore slump” by CONNECTING!

The transition from your exciting first year to the often-challenging terrain of sophomore year can be tough for many college students. This phenomenon, commonly known as the "sophomore slump," can lead to academic struggles, decreased excitement, and even feelings of aimlessness. Keep up your journey’s momentum by connecting with the college, with faculty, with advisors, with peers, and with projects you’re passionate about.

Thinking about changing your major? Don’t stress! On average, college students change their majors at least THREE times over their college careers. Sticking with a major you don’t enjoy isn’t smart. Pick your passion!

Juniors

Don’t Quit! COMMIT!

Commit to graduating! You’ve come too far to slow down now, journeyer!

Hopefully you have committed to a major by the time you begin your junior year. If you haven’t, there’s still time! Talk to your favorite faculty members and advisors. Talk to other students. But most of all, be led by what you love and the impact you want to make on the world.

If you have decided on a major, now is the time to commit to a post-graduation path. If you plan to attend graduate school, now is the time to start looking at programs and their requirements. If you plan to join the workforce, are you making industry connections? Are you putting out feelers? Are you working on your resume? Are you doing things that make you more marketable?

Seniors

The end is in sight! All you need to do is COMPLETE!

Dear Explorer, take a minute to congratulate yourself! You are sooooo close to reaching your destination! Your senior year in college is a time to complete your coursework, complete internships and capstone courses, and complete your preparation for life after college. To set yourself up for better job or graduate school prospects, you need to create a map for success during your senior year of college.

Don’t let a lack of funds prevent you from completing! Apply for a completion scholarship!
