Congratulations! You’ve decided to set out on one of the most exciting journeys of your life: a college education! As with every journey, your college experience will be more successful if you have a guide. The resources below will help you map out each year of your time in the UVU College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) because every year of your journey will be different.
A Time for Exploration
Successful explorers are curious, persevere when they run into roadblocks, and ask for help when they need it! CHSS faculty and advisors are here to help you explore your options and discover what you want from your time at UVU and beyond. To increase your chances of success, complete these activities during your first year:
Avoid the “Sophomore Slump” by Connecting
The transition from your exciting first year to the often-challenging terrain of sophomore year, commonly known as the "sophomore slump," can sometimes lead to academic struggles, decreased excitement, and even feelings of aimlessness.
Thinking about changing your major? Don’t stress! On average, college students change their majors at least THREE times over their college careers. No matter your path, keep up your journey’s momentum by connecting with the college, faculty, advisors, peers, and with projects you’re passionate about.
Don’t Quit, Commit!
You’ve come too far on your journey to slow down now. If you haven’t decided on a major, talk to your favorite faculty members, advisors, and other students. But most of all, be led by what you love and the impact you want to make on the world.
If you have decided on a major, now is the time to commit to a post-graduation path. If you plan to attend graduate school, now is the time to start looking at programs and their requirements. If you plan to join the workforce, are you making industry connections and working on your resume?
The End is in Sight!
Take a minute to congratulate yourself because you are so close to your journey’s destination! Use your senior year to complete your coursework and internships, complete your post-grad preparation, and, most importantly, apply for graduation. If a lack of funding is keeping you from the end of your journey, apply for a completion scholarship today!
