Congratulations on completing the prerequisite courses and on your efforts toward becoming a nurse. Even though not all candidates will be accepted we appreciate you applying to Utah Valley University. Please read all of the following information carefully so you will not miss any critical information.

Admission to the UVU Nursing program is contingent upon satisfactory results of both a federal criminal background check and a drug screen. Information on how to obtain both reports will be provided upon acceptance. The Department of Nursing has sole discretion to deny acceptance based on information contained in either of these two reports.

The UVU Nursing program is a very rigorous, time-intensive program. Students are expected to attend all classes, labs and clinical assignments as scheduled. Classes, labs and clinical are not flexible and if missed could jeopardize one’s success in the program. If considering working during the program, considerable flexibility will be required in your work schedule. The nursing program requires a full commitment each semester, from first day of class until the last day of class.

NOTE: If you have already completed an RN program, please request information and/or an application to the needed programs from the nursing office located in HP 203.

The Nursing Department Admissions Process

A copy of your TEAS test results.

An official sealed transcript from all colleges or universities in which your grades have NOT been already transferred and articulated

NOTE: if your courses were taken at UVU or already transferred to your record then no transcript is necessary.

TOEFL results if English is your second language.

Applications must be received no later than Friday, May 15, 2015 by 4:00 p.m.

3 – Notifications of Decisions

ALL APPLICANTS will be notified of either non-acceptance or of a scheduled interview via myUVU EMAIL between 3 to 7 days of the closing of the application. CHECK YOUR myUVU EMAIL.

Interview Day and Time are assigned–you will not choose your own time; therefore, it is vital that you RESERVE the week of June 8-12 to be available for interview.

You MUST respond via e-mail, by the specified deadline, with either an “accept” or “decline” of the offer for an interview.  You will NOT get a second chance if you fail to respond by the specified deadline.

All e-mail responses will be verified by a return e-mail. If accepting the offer, you will then be given the specific day and time of your interview. No further e-mails will follow and you will be expected to arrive on the day and time identified. No interviews will be rescheduled. Failure to attend the scheduled interview will result in non-acceptance for this application time frame. All interviewed applicants will be notified by U.S. mail of FINAL admission decisions. This may take up to 3 weeks following the interview. Acceptance and Alternate Notification will be sent to the mailing address you include on the application–please make sure the address is correct and written clearly for the address where you will be located in June.

5 - Transferring Credits to UVU

It is your responsibility to have official transcripts of all previous college course work sent to the UVU Admissions Office. Transcripts accepted as official by that office are evaluated and posted on your UVU academic record.

All transfer credits are evaluated by the Transfer Credit Office only, NOT BY THE NURSING DEPARTMENT. Although Nursing will accept official copies of your transcripts, once opened, they are no longer “official” and you must provide an additional copy to the UVU admissions Office in order for transfer credits to be evaluated.  Therefore, if you choose to provide the Department of Nursing with official transcripts, you MUST ALSO provide an official, sealed        transcript to the UVU Admissions Office!! The Department of Nursing DOES NOT process and/or post ANY transfer credits to your record!

  • 6 – Prerequisite Course Work Information

All Prerequisite course work must be complete and on a transcript with a B- grade minimum by the application deadline of May 15, 2015. Only final grades, posted on the transcript by the deadline, are acceptable. The Nursing Admissions Committee WILL NOT attempt to locate missing grades. It is YOUR responsibility to assure all grade information has been submitted with your nursing application by the deadline, in order for it to be available when review of application begins.

7 – Acceptable College Credits

Although there are a variety of ways to obtain college credit, some are appropriate for the nursing prerequisites while others are not. Please be aware of the following credits and/or grades, and how they may affect your eligibility to apply: ACT Scores:At UVU, ACT scores are only used to determine placement into a subject, NOT to waive ANY prerequisite course. MATH 1050, or a higher level math course which required MATH 1050 as a prerequisite (except for Trigonometry), is required in order to satisfy the Quantitative Literacy requirement for both the nursing program prerequisite and UVU. Repeating Course Work:Repeating a course for a better grade is an option and does not affect your UVU nursing application adversely; however, only one repeat, per course,  in a 5 year time frame will be allowed. The second attempt is used for the application.  Once a course is repeated, grades for the first attempt will not be used to satisfy any degree requirement. Therefore, if the grade for your most recent attempt falls below a B- grade, you are ineligible to apply.  Pass/Failor Credit/No Credit Grades:With the majority of points awarded being based on the prerequisite GPA, only letter grades are acceptable for all prerequisites. AP Credits:AP scores of 3, 4 or 5 can be accepted for prerequisite requirements. These must be posted to your transcript as credit.  For purposes of calculating the GPA, a score of 3 = B+, 4 = A-, and 5 = A.   CourseSubstitutions:In order to give the student the best opportunity to have a competitive GPA, there are some courses which may be used as a substitution for a prerequisite if a higher grade was received in the substituting course and the grade in the pre-requisite course meets nursing standard minimum grade. The following are examples of appropriate suggestions:ENGL 1010: If ENGL 2010 or 2020 has been completed with a better grade than the ENGL 1010, that course can be substituted for the prerequisite ENGL 1010 course.MATH 1050: Any higher-level math class, which required College Algebra as a prerequisite (except Trigonometry) can be substituted for the prerequisite MATH 1050 course. All other substitutions will be determined on an individual basis by the Department of Nursing Admission Committee.

8 – TEAS TEST INFORMATION

Taking the TEAS Test requires a Test Voucher from the pre-nursing counselor. If you have not yet taken the TEAS you must do so to submit the application. Please see the pre-nursing counselor for the voucher and information on taking the TEAS test. One TEAS test per application is allowed. Any score below 50% makes test ineligible. Only two TEAS tests are allowed in a 5-year time frame. If you have two scores you will choose which of the completed tests to submit. There will be no mixing of test scores. Scores are valid for 5 years beginning Sept., 2010. We only accept TEAS version V. If an early version was taken it will not be accepted. If submitting expired TEAS scores, they will not be used in reviewing your application, which could result in your ineligibility. Scores submitted with previous applications are NOT maintained by the nursing department. It is your responsibility to keep copies of your scores.

9 – Interview Process

The top candidates from the TEAS and GPA are selected to interview. The interview process is standardized to ensure that each candidate interviewed has an equal opportunity to be objectively evaluated. If selected to interview, read the letter, follow directions, and study the suggested material that is sent by the nursing office. Interviews are held on the UVU campus. The interview process takes approximately 2 hours to complete. An interview does not guarantee acceptance. From those interviewed up to 40 candidates will be selected, notified, and offered positions in the Program for Fall Semester 2015. A group of alternates will also be selected and notified. If accepted you must meet all deadlines. Failure to do so will forfeit your position and it will be offered to an alternate. Read the material and instructions sent with your invitation to interview. Prepare as you would for a professional job interview. At UVU, the Career Development Center in LC 409 helps students with professional interview skills. Interview times are to be scheduled June 8-12. RESERVE THIS WEEK. Plan to rearrange your schedule if you are accepted for an interview.

10 – Acceptance Information

Acceptance is contingent upon the following:

  • Letter of acceptance after completion of the interview.
  • Submitting all requested documentation by deadlines.
  • Completion of required immunizations, current CPR certification, and physical exam.
  • Providing satisfactory results of both a federal background check and drug screen. The background check will include a record of employment and all non-juvenile arrests and convictions, including sex offenses. UVU has sole discretion to deny entrance based upon the information contained in either of these two reports.
  • MANDATORY attendance at the NURSING ORIENTATION Meeting. This meeting is to be held on Monday, Aug. 17, 2015 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. If unable to attend or late, your position will be forfeited and given to an alternate.  Dueto changes in UVU registration process, students will be able to register for nursing courses before orientation:however, failure to attend orientation will result in the nursing department dropping your classes and allowing analternate to register.

Due to limited space within the nursing program, not all qualified applicants will be accepted. Alternate candidates will be notified, in rank-order, if openings occur prior to the beginning of the semester. Candidates and applications will not be forwarded to subsequent application periods. A new complete application is required to be considered in another application period. If not accepted, an applicant can only be interviewed twice in a 5 year time frame.
